Krewe History

In the Fall of 2000, a group of African Americans came together to form the first African American Krewe in Shreveport, Louisiana to increase minority participation during the Mardi Gras season.  Harambee is a Swahili word meaning “TO PULL TOGETHER” .  The Krewe also supports a charity of choice, the NW Louisiana Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation. In 2006, the Harambee Kids Krewe was formed for teens and youth ages 8 -18 to increase minority children’s participation during the Mardi Gras season. The Krewe Kids must maintain at least a C average in school.  The Kids Krewe also supports charities that aid children with special needs.
